Formula Lab Percent composition and empirical formulas
About this activityChemistry · Grades 9–12 · About 60 minutes

Learning outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Perform molar calculations: molar mass, grams to moles, and moles to grams.
  • Calculate the percent composition of a compound from its formula, and the percent water in a hydrate from lab data.
  • Determine an empirical formula from percent composition or from mass data, including ratios that must be multiplied to whole numbers.
  • Determine a molecular formula from an empirical formula and a molar mass.

Standards alignment

  • HS-PS1-7 NGSS: Use mathematical representations to support the claim that atoms, and therefore mass, are conserved during a chemical reaction.
  • HSN-Q.A.1 CCSS Math: Use units to understand problems and to guide the solution of multi-step problems.
  • SEP 5 NGSS Science and Engineering Practice: use mathematics and computational thinking.

Includes

Four stages: a molar calculation warm-up, percent composition of four compounds plus a virtual hydrate lab, empirical formulas from percent and from a virtual magnesium-burning lab (with ×2 challenges), and four molecular formula problems; and a printable lab worksheet. A teacher answer key is available from Logical Home Schooling.
