Density Lab Weigh it, sink it, and find out what it's made of
About this activityPhysical Science and Chemistry · Grades 6–12 · About 50 minutes

Learning outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Measure mass with a tared balance, and volume by water displacement, reading the meniscus correctly.
  • Calculate density and percent error, and identify unknown materials by their density.
  • Predict whether an object floats or sinks by comparing its density with water's.
  • Use measured evidence to evaluate a claim, as Archimedes did with the king's crown.

Standards alignment

  • MS-PS1-2 NGSS (supports): Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances, such as density, to identify them.
  • SEP 3, 4, 5 NGSS Science and Engineering Practices: plan and carry out investigations, analyze and interpret data, and use mathematics.

Includes

Five lab stages with a drawn balance, graduated cylinder, and overflow can; random sample sizes so every student collects their own data; and a printable lab worksheet. A teacher answer key is available from Logical Home Schooling.

Close-up view

Read the bottom of the curved water surface (the meniscus), with your eye level with it.

Data table

Reference densities at 20 °C

1 mL of water takes up 1 cm³, so g/mL and g/cm³ are the same unit.
