Balance Lab Conservation of mass, one coefficient at a time
About this activityChemistry · Grades 9–12 · About 50 minutes

Learning outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Explain how a balanced chemical equation shows the law of conservation of mass.
  • Tell coefficients from subscripts, and explain why only coefficients may change.
  • Count the atoms of each element on both sides of an equation, including atoms inside parentheses.
  • Balance synthesis, decomposition, replacement, and combustion equations in the lowest whole-number ratio.

Standards alignment

  • HS-PS1-7 NGSS: Use mathematical representations to support the claim that atoms, and therefore mass, are conserved during a chemical reaction.
  • HS-PS1-2 NGSS (supports): Explain the outcome of simple chemical reactions using patterns of chemical properties.

Includes

30 leveled equations with hints and stars, a timed rapid round, a mode for checking any equation, and a printable lab worksheet. A teacher answer key is available from Logical Home Schooling.
